Rudolf Steiner gave the Foundation Stone Meditation to the members of the Anthroposophical Society in 1923 after arson destroyed the First Goetheanum in Dornach. This event was the first of many terrible future obstacles that the society would have to face and he gave this meditation to strengthen the forces of the souls of those who would take it into their hearts. Sergei O Prokofieff, one of the foremost pupils of Rudolf Steiner called the Foundation Stone Meditation the quintessence of all Anthroposophy and for those willing to work with it, it is a path to one's true humanity, or one might equally say, a path to the spirit. For in it one finds the idea of trichotomy, or body, soul and spirit, something abolished at the Council of Constantinople in 869AD. It was only at the turn of the 20th Century that it was once again possible to speak of spirit and Rudolf Steiner was the inaugurator of the idea of threefoldness of individual human beings and of the society in which they live.It is this germinating spirit that is being threatened by adversarial forces in our times. For the adversarial forces would have the human being fall to the level of a beast and relinquish his or her humanity. In the Foundation Stone Meditation one hears a call to the human soul, to embark on the fully conscious development of this humanity, giving it precise instructions on how to do so and also, paradoxically, one hears a call from the human soul itself for the protection of higher beings against those adversarial powers who would seek to derail this development. In our time freedom means that if we want the help of the spiritual world we must ask for it consciously and freely. In this book we explore how this four part meditation meditation is such a question whose answer creates a counter force, counter balance, counter image and counter weight to the four adversarial beings working on human beings in our times: Asuras, Ahriman, Lucifer and Sorath. Never before have we needed to understand this meditation as we do today - our humanity depends on it.
