ʿAntarah ibn Shaddād was a celebrated sixth-century Arab warrior and poet of the Banū ʿAbs tribe. Born to an Arab father and an enslaved African mother, he overcame slavery and social prejudice through courage, exceptional skill in battle, and poetic brilliance. His poems—especially his renowned Muʿallaqah—explore love, bravery, honor, and his devotion to ʿAblah.
His life later inspired Sīrat ʿAntar, a vast Arabic folk epic recounting his heroic adventures. Although composed by later storytellers, the work transformed ʿAntarah into one of the Arab world’s most enduring literary heroes and inspired numerous books, films, television dramas, and musical adaptations.
