by Thomas Graves Jr. Gilbert (Author)

Mordecai Gwin's will was not dated, but probate was February 1785/March 1, 1785. Mordecai and his seven sons were all in the Revolutionary War. Edward Gwin, Sr. (born 1747) was the son of Mordecai of Orange County, North Carolina where Edward is documented as being a lieutenant, captain, major and colonel in the American Revolution - a soldier from the beginning to the end. Mordecai's sons left North Carolina between 1785 and 1790, some moving to Tennessee where they lived in Sumner County prior to their move to Carroll County in 1820. The Gwin's or Gwinn's were instrumental in the development of Carroll County and helped to promote its growth and government. Webster Gilbert was born about 1780 in North Carolina, died after 1840. Webster was one of the early pioneers of Tennessee. In the War of 1812, Webster suffered many privations. There are three proven children of Webster Gilbert and wife, Susannah Byrd: John Gilbert, Webster Gilbert, Jr., and William Gilbert. William and other members of the family migrated to Carroll County, Tennessee in 1830. This detailed family history is a must for anyone researching these lines. Maps, illustrations, and a full-name index add to the value of this work.
