Our narrower obligations often blind us to larger social responsibilities. The moral claims arising out of special relationships--family, friends, colleagues, and so on--always seem to take priority. Robert E. Goodin is a reader in government at the University of Essex. An associate editor of Ethics, he is the author of Manipulatory Politics, Political Theory and Public Policy, and coeditor of Nuclear Deterrence, the latter two published by the University of Chicago Press.
