by Kenneth M. Price (Editor), Susan Belasco Smith (Editor)

Covering the decades from the 1830s through the end of the century, as well as the eastern, southern, and western regions of the United States, these essays, by a diverse group of scholars, examine a variety of periodicals from the well-known Atlantic Monthly to small papers such as The National Era. They illustrate how literary analysis can be enriched by consideration of social history, publishing contexts, the literary marketplace, and the relationships between authors and editors.

Author Biography

Kenneth M. Price is Professor of English at the College of William and Mary. He is the author of Whitman and Tradition: The Poet in His Century; editor, with Robert C. Leitz III, of Critical Essays on George Santayana; and editor with Dennis Berthold of Dear Brother Walt: The Letters of Thomas Jefferson Whitman. Susan Belasco Smith is Associate Professor of English at the University of Tulsa. She is editor of Summer on the Lakes in 1843 by Margaret Fuller, and, with Larry J. Reynolds, "These Sad by Glorious Days" Dispatches from Europe, 1846-1850 by Margaret Fuller.
