Title
SUNAN ABU DAWUD (English Translation With Explanatory Notes) 3 Vol. Set
Abū Dāwūd Sulaymān ibn al-Ashʿath al-Sijistānī (817–889 CE) was one of the most eminent scholars of ḥadīth in Islamic history and the compiler of Sunan Abu Dawud, one of the Kutub al-Sittah (the Six Canonical Collections of Sunni Islam).
Born in Sijistān (in present-day Iran/Afghanistan), Abu Dāwūd devoted his life to the collection, verification, and teaching of the Prophet Muḥammad’s ﷺ sayings and practices. He traveled extensively across the Islamic world—including Mecca, Medina, Iraq, Syria, and Egypt—studying under leading scholars of his time. Among his teachers were renowned authorities such as Ahmad ibn Hanbal, whose influence shaped Abu Dāwūd’s scholarly rigor.
His monumental work, Sunan Abu Dawud, contains approximately 4,800 aḥādīth, carefully selected from a far larger corpus. The collection focuses particularly on legal (fiqh) rulings, organizing narrations according to jurisprudential chapters such as purification, prayer, transactions, marriage, and criminal law. Abu Dāwūd was meticulous in noting the strength and reliability of narrations, often commenting on weak or disputed reports—an approach that distinguished his work and enhanced its scholarly value.
Praised for his precision, integrity, and balance, Abu Dāwūd sought not merely to compile traditions, but to preserve those most relevant to Islamic law and daily practice. His Sunan became an indispensable reference for jurists and scholars across generations and remains widely studied, taught, and published today.
Abu Dāwūd passed away in 889 CE (275 AH) in Basra, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shape Islamic scholarship and jurisprudence worldwide.
