Hours
On a chilly December evening in Venice, just before Christmas, a street vendor is killed during a scuffle in Campo San Stefano. The only witnesses are tourists browsing the counterfeit designer bags he had been selling. The victim, an African immigrant without a work permit, was one of many trying to make a living on the streets. Commissario Guido Brunetti can’t help but wonder why someone would murder a man living on society’s margins.
As he begins probing into this hidden world of illegal trade, Brunetti discovers that far more is at stake than cheap handbags. Despite being cautioned by his superior, Patta, to stay away from the case, Brunetti becomes increasingly determined to uncover the truth. He refuses to let the killing be dismissed as trivial, pushing deeper into the murky subculture of immigrant life in Venice.
Rich in atmosphere and detail, Blood from a Stone is both an engaging mystery and a thought-provoking exploration of contemporary Venice. Leon’s evocative setting, paired with the warmth of Brunetti’s family life, makes this an intelligent, layered story—another standout in the beloved series.
